Next up in the roster of incredible coaches that will be joining us out in Gran Canaria in the new year, is Trent Webby! Trent Webby is a Beach Volleyball Coach and International player from New Zealand!

1. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BEACH VOLLEYBALL CAREER
I have been playing beach volleyball for 12 years competing at several Beach Pro Tour Future events representing New Zealand. I’m planning to compete on the Beach Pro Tour again in 2024.
2. WHAT'S YOUR HISTORY WITH DEEP DISH VACATIONS?
I first started coaching with Deep Dish on Tour in Portugal 2023. Since then, I have represented Deep Dish at the inaugural Club Champs and Sixes competitions, taking first place at them both.
3. DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-CAMP WORDS OF WISDOM FOR PLAYERS COMING OUT TO GRAN CANARIA?
I’m a man of many wise words, but I’ll let you in on a secret. Lemons are the crossbreed of a citron and a bitter orange. So, life didn’t give us lemons, we made them. Get out there and make your lemons, the lemonade will come naturally!
5. WHAT IS A LIFE-CHANGING BOOK/MOVIE/QUOTE THAT YOU HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO OTHER PEOPLE?
A recent read for me was ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear. It’s about how small yet powerful changes applied over time will build mastery in anything you do. The book is like a recipe to help you prime your environment to become a successful person effortlessly. A great tool for making your lemons!
6. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE DRILL OR SKILL TO COACH?
When you begin to learn a new skill, it is all about fundamentals (i.e. passing, setting, attacking, etc). Once the fundamentals are at a competent level, I’m a big fan of the niche techniques that you don’t hear much about, for example, recovering the block, recycling the attack, transition setting, and more.
7. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AT THE GRAN CANARIA CAMP?
Mid-winter beach volleyball. There are not many places in the world where you can hop off a 3-hour flight in the middle of winter and be back on a warm beach. Deep Dish Gran Can is a unique experience, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.
8. WHY SHOULD PLAYERS OR COACHES JOIN THE DEEP DISH GRAN CANARIA CAMP NEXT YEAR?
Beach volleyball is a community sport, and opportunities like Deep Dish Gran Can are the best way to broaden your connections within the community. Come and make some likeminded friends and who knows, one day you might meet them again on another beach.
9. DO YOU HAVE AN EMBARRASSING MOMENT FROM CAMP OR THAT HAPPENED WHILE PLAYING BEACH VOLLEYBALL?
Hard to think, or say, some of my embarrassing moments. One that comes to mind was performance issues… It was the semi-final of a national tour event in New Zealand, friends and family watching from their homes around the world. I lost 5-21, 7-21. Ouch.
